Construction Manager in Training (CMIT)

The CMIT program is ideal for:

  • New and recent graduates of engineering, construction management or university programs
  • Senior college students
  • Experienced professionals just embarking on the path to become professional construction managers
  • Mid-career individuals who are new to the profession

Who should apply?

  • To qualify for CMIT, an applicant must show one of these combinations of experience and education:
  • Bachelors or master degree or status as a senior in a construction management or closely related degree program at an accredited college or university*  
  • Associate’s degree or certificate-level professionals with degrees in construction management or a closely related field, plus two years of general design/construction experience
  • Four years of general design/construction experience without a degree in construction management or a closely related field

* While college seniors are encouraged to apply, the CMIT designation is awarded only after completion of degree

How to get your CMIT:

  •  Meet minimum education requirements listed above
  •  Submit the formal CMIT application, current resume and a program payment of $195 by e-mailing ggehringer@cmaanet.org,  faxing (703) 356-6388 or mailing: CMAA, Attn: CMIT Application, 7926 Jones Branch Drive, suite 800, McLean, VA 22102-3303
  •  Complete the CMIT Capstone course, "The History of Construction Management Practices and Procedures"
  •  Score at least 75 percent on the Capstone course

CMITs are expected to aggressively pursue CCM certification; consequently, the CMIT designation lasts for no longer than five years.

The CMIT designation:

  •  Shows employers, clients, your peers, and the general public that you are committed to acquiring the knowledge and capabilities of becoming a professional, practicing construction manager  
  •  Gives you a structured path for professional development while having the CMIT distinction
  •  Demonstrates competence in construction management practice early in your career
  •  Increases the awareness in a CMIT to the body of knowledge and principles represented by a CCM and professional construction managers

CMIT Costs

  • The $195 program payment includes:
  •  CMIT/Capstone text and assessment
  •  One year membership to CMAA, which can be renewed for two additional years at $25
  •  CMIT pin

*Those who are already CMAA members will pay $60 for the CMIT/Capstone text and assessment.
