Challenges of Public Housing: Exploring NYCHA's Physical Needs Assessment Progra

Thumbnail

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the largest public housing authority in North America and owns, operates, and maintains 177,666 apartments in 318 developments on over 2,500 acres of land throughout the five boroughs of the City of New York, in 2,413 residential buildings containing 3,314 elevators. As one can imagine, maintaining a comprehensive database of building condition information is essential to effective operation. Required building condition surveys must include a comprehensive inspection of various building components and sub-components, which range from roofs to corridors to heating/cooling systems. This session examines the lessons learned in developing and managing this $23 million effort.
