Runway 18R/36L Rehabilitation Project

2022 Project Achievement Award
Transportation: Construction value greater than $50 Million
Runway 18R/36L Rehabilitation Project
Owner: Dallas Ft. Worth International Airport
Project Team: AECOM, Austin Industries, RS&H

To save time, budget, and with an eye on sustainability, AECOM determined that only the Runway’s 17- to 19-inch concrete keel pavement would be replaced, applying lessons learned from the rehabilitation of its sister runway, 17/35C. Through collaboration with internal stakeholders, airline partners and the FAA, the team accelerated the project’s construction schedule, closing the Runway on June 1, 2020, a full 78 days ahead of schedule. The early closure also allowed the construction manager to mitigate poor weather delays and other unforeseen conditions and re-open the Runway 16 days ahead of schedule.
