[Chapter] Dig Indy Pump Station

Project Description: The DigIndy Tunnel System is a 28.6-mile series of six deep rock tunnels that can store and convey up to 290 million gallons of combined sewer overflows during wet weather events in Indianapolis. All captured flows are conveyed by gravity to Citizens Energy Group’s Southport Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant, where flows are lifted nearly 300 feet from the tunnel system and into the plant via Citizens 90mgd Deep Tunnel Pump Station. This tour will include major components of the pump station infrastructure, including access to a nearly 300-foot deep limestone cavern that houses the tunnel pumps and other critical components necessary for the successful operation of the pump station.

Meet the Presenter:

Mike Miller - Citizens Energy Group Manager, Underground Engineering and Construction:

Mike has over 28 years of experience in the geotechnical engineering and construction industry. He spent the first 15 years of his career with a geotechnical consulting firm, where he specialized in the design and construction of heavy underground civil infrastructure projects including numerous tunnel projects across the U.S. Mike transitioned to Citizens Energy Group to manage the design and construction of Citizens’ $2B DigIndy tunnel program. The DigIndy program includes 28 miles of deep rock tunnel that was constructed to help Citizens address the challenges associated with Indianapolis’ antiquated combined sewer system.

Tour Details:

Site Location – 3800 W. Southport Road (plant entrance near the very large pine tree)

Attendees are encouraged to carpool.
